"An invitation to the festival"
Wednesday 27 January 2010

by Ian Henderson

New Zealand has triumphed in competitions held as part of the St John International Youth Festival in Lincoln, University.

The New Zealand team won six of seven categories in the International competitions, and took out the New Zealand Army Cup and the Commonwealth Shield. The New Zealand team was competing against teams from Australia, Malaysia, Canada, England, Singapore, Hong Kong and Cymru Wales.

In the National New Zealand competitions (which were held at the same time), the Northern Region (South Island) team, which included Cadets from Christchurch, Canterbury, Nelson/Marlborough, the West Coast, and South Canterbury, won the first and second places in the team competition, won the first and second places in the individual competition, and were awarded the coveted Sir Alfred Robin Memorial Shield, for Champion Region.

The Northern Region (SI) teams were competing against four other squads from around the country.

Youth Competitions include both individual and team sections, and test St John Youth Cadets’ skills in a variety of mock situations, such as drill, leadership teamwork, communication and first aid.

Overall, New Zealand teams competing at the Festival won 21 trophies out of 28, a huge achievement, says Michael Brooke, St John National Youth Director, “St John is exceptionally proud of these young people. A lot of hard work went in to preparing for these competitions, which are historically very testing of the St John Cadets. It’s great that they have come out on top, and it’s a credit to their hard work and commitment.”

Mr Brooke thanked all those who helped with the day’s events. “The organising committee, judges, patients, marshals, the Friends of the Emergency Department volunteers who helped deliver food – the day went so well because everyone worked together. I especially congratulate all competitors from around New Zealand and internationally – it’s a big achievement to get this far, so well done to all.”

"St John Youth members join forces to take on the world"
Monday, 9 November 2009

Four New Zealand teenagers are taking on the challenge of representing St John at international competitions in New Zealand.

Matthew Wright and Sarah Gagliardi, both of Christchurch, Karina Hallberg of Hamilton, and Rosie Whiting of Alexandra are the members of the St John New Zealand team at the International Youth Festival in January 2010.

The International Youth Festival takes place in Christchurch between 25 January and 1 February.

Based at Lincoln University, over 500 members of St John Youth from New Zealand and around the world will be participating in a week-long festival of fun, activities and making new friends.

Competitions are an integral part of the Festival, both national (involving teams from within St John in New Zealand) and international (a New Zealand team competing alongside teams from other St John Youth organisations overseas).

Competitions test Cadets skills in first aid, communications, health care and drill (marching). All four Cadets are high achievers in St John Youth:

- Seventeen year old Karina Hallberg first joined St John Youth in 2006. She achieved the prestigious Grand Prior award in 2008 and represented Midland Region at the National Youth Competitions in 2009. Not only does Karina excel with St John Youth, she is also Deputy Head Girl at Sacred Heart Girls’ College in Hamilton.

- Seventeen year old Rosie Whiting is a Cadet Leader in Alexandra and has been a member of St John Youth since 2000. She has represented Southern Region at the National Youth Competitions and Festival in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Rosie was recently named Southern Region Cadet of the Year.

- Christchurch teenagers Sarah Gagliardi is St John Northern Region South Island Regional Cadet of the Year, and Matthew Wright is Deputy Regional Cadet of the Year. Both are 17. They were members of the Northern Region South Island team which won 12 of 20 trophies, including Champion Region, at the St John National Youth Competitions and Festival in April. They have both also received their Grand Prior Award.

The Grand Prior is the highest award other than awards for bravery which St John presents to Youth members.

Michael Brooke, St John Youth Director, says “We look forward to working with these outstanding cadets. The competition will put their clinical skills to the test and we believe they all have the aptitude and knowledge to do very well.”

Team managers Jacci Tatnell and Angela Williamson will guide the team as they prepare to represent New Zealand at the International Youth Festival.

“Congratulations to the national team and their managers. This is a significant achievement for all of them and we wish them the best of luck,” says Mr Brooke.
